wiiufrontWhile Wii U owners are basically taking comfort in knowing what’s “coming soon” for the machine, some people (mostly non Wii U owners, I suspect) have been complaining that there’s nothing to play. I say that’s rubbish. There’s heaps to play on the machine, definitely more than I have the time to get through. Here I’ll silence the whiners and outline the best the machine has to offer right now.

1. New Super Mario Bros. U

Everyone enjoys a Mario game. I’ve been critical of the graphics in this Wii U edition, but it’s great fun and should be played.

2. ZombiU

Survival horror debuts on Wii U. ZombiU is difficult and uses the gamepad in innovative ways. Suck up the average graphics and play it. Right now you can download it for $44.95. Which in Australia is a good price.

3. Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed

It’s the best Mario Kart klone there has ever been, and five players on the Wii U version means it’s the best version out there.

4. Lego City Undercover

A well received and original Lego title, Undercover is an open world adventure full of action and humour.

5. NintendoLand

You’ve probably played it to death, but it’s still a great game with incredible variety you can come back to time and time again.

6. Scribblenauts Unlimited

A more non linear, open world feel helped this logic puzzler transition to the big screen. Scribblenauts is a adorable and fun to play by yourself or a friend.

7. Zen Pinball 2

Using the gamepad as a pinball table controller definitely feels natural, and you can pay for table packs you want after trying them for free first.

It may be simple, but for a few dollars you can grab a few hours of entertainment from the eShop. Download more multiplayer maps as you like them. Despite the low critical scores it is actually fun for a few hours here and there.

9. Trine 2 The Director’s Cut

Trine 2 is a puzzle/platformer with incredibly detailed 1080p graphics. All accounts say the Wii U version looks the best and adds some interesting control features thanks to the Wii U gamepad.

10. Need for Speed Most Wanted

Sure it’s a port of a 360/PS3 game, but extra features and better graphics give Wii U owners the definitive version of the game.

11. Bit.Trip Presents… Runner 2: Future Legend Of Rhythm Alien

I haven’t played this yet, but by all accounts this rhythm based “auto running” platformer is a blast to play. Read some reviews and you’d have to agree that Wii U exclusive is worth looking at.

12. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

It’s a system seller, this game. If you’re looking for a hardcore RPG adventure that you can sink some serious time into, here it is on Wii U.

13. Call Of Duty Black Ops 2

It’s the latest and best modern COD, and it’s here on Wii U. Play 2 player with a screen to yourself thanks to the gamepad. Sold.

14. The Ports

There’s a multitude of high rating ports on Wii U Mass Effect 3, Ninja Gaiden 3 and Darksiders 2 are the most notable.

15. Chasing Aurora

For a unique multiplayer experience give Chasing Aurora a go. I reckon it deserved a better write up than it got, for less than $10 on the eShop it’s a good few hours entertainment. Just play multiplayer.

16. Nintendo’s 30 cent Virtual Console specials

Right now there’s Punch Out!! to play for 30 cents. Even if you play it for 30 minutes just to see how hard it was, it’s worth 30 cents.

 . . .

So I came up with 16 games there is to play for the type of fan I am. Toki Tori 2 on the eShop is also getting some great reviews. If you like Tekken there’s Tag Tournament 2, if you like sport there’s NBA2K13 and FIFA 13. There’s also Assassin’s Creed 3 and Batman Arkham City for the adventurers. I just can’t cop people saying there’s nothing to play on Wii U. I know the big games like Pikmin 3 aren’t here and other games we want are still around the corner, but come on. Look and you’ll find something to tide you over.

if I had a Wii U by now I would have already traded it in for a PS3. Not even joking… Seriously. That selection of games is terribly weak!

    • DIck

      Shut the fuck up troll.

    • bigevilworldwide

I bought one hoping that Nintendo was actually going to do something with it…Not just tell me they are working on games and “ONE DAY” they will come out…..And I just sold it because I was tired of it sitting here doing nothing and no games coming out….It’s obviously hard for some people to comprehend that people don’t want year+ old ports they may already own, like I have the Mass Effect trilogy why in the hell would I pay $60 for just Mass Effect 3. Or COD…They need to do something real consumers want real games not just were working on it just wait eventually we’ll release some games

  • idiot

New Super Mario Bros. U – remake
    ZombiU – ign gave 6.3, gamespot 4.5/10
Sonic and All Stars Racing Transformed – not best version. PC has more, but also multiplatform game.
    Lego City Undercover – maybe
NintendoLand – i dont play mini games
    Scribblenauts Unlimited – multiplatform
Zen Pinball 2 – multiplatform and mini game
TANK! TANK! TANK! – ign gave 5.8
    Trine 2 – multiplatform
Need for speed most wanted – multiplatform
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate – first good game
Call of duty black ops 2 – dead on Wii U, when 99% plays on PC,X360 and ps3

  • This is it

    The list gives us:
    Horrible games
    Mini games
    Multiplatform games

WHERE ARE GOOD EXCLUSIVES? There is only 1 game, Monster Hunter 3, but thats it.

Does it really matter if there’s plenty to play on the Wii U? I don’t care. It’s not a real next gen console. Why buy a new console right now if it won’t be able to compete with the real next gen consoles? That’s the real problem people seem to ignore. It’s a last gen console.

    • Holyfire

What ppl ignore is that PS4 games will be archaic in gameplay. Its primary input will still be dual analogue. Play the latest FPSs with clunky slow controls. We were at that level generations ago

  • Holyfire

Its also amazing to see how much abuse the WiiU takes for ots “lack of performance”. For comparison, they’re about to release Ouya, a low cost basic Android system that will have the most nominal games, cashing in on mobile popularity (I dont think it will succeed). I also have a young friend who plays Minecraft from morning to night ever since he had it eons ago. He runs it mostly on a laptop that averages the game at 15 frames per second…

  • Holyfire

Thats also on the lowest settings,
Do also excuse my redundant reply, Android is so inadequate its nearly impossible to post with it. So many faults and glitch niggles. Took 25 minutes to post this.. and ppl think WiiU loads slow!

  • IkariX

Quit bitching. I have a PS3, 360 and Wii U and I am loving my Wii U. Don’t understand why everyone is hating on the Wii U so much. It’s a great system. There will be more great games. Nintendo will deliver

    • bigevilworldwide

That’s thing you and people like you obviously don’t grasp only you fanboys want to own things based off of there will be, or eventually, one day…..Actual consumers want to know what can they buy RIGHT NOW. Or what’s coming within the next say 3 months, not whats coming in a year or couple years….Half the list fanboys keep spouting are games not announced or not being worked on just games that FANBOYS know Nintendo will eventually release….I sold my Wii U, I’m not playing the hurry buy our console and wait I waited 6 months and 6 months later there were maybe 4 new games…

I’ll give the Wii U credit though it did have the best version of Aliens: Colonial Marines since it’s the version that didn’t release.

  • Chris

I own the Wii U. I have Gamefly… my Q is empty. Enough said.

  • oo7PorscheMGS

lol, please tell me how ANY of those games are even HALF as amazing as Tomb Raider, God of War, BIOSHOCK INFINITE, or hey lets say THE LAST OF US and BEYOND TWO SOULS… Oh, and GTA V 😉 There is NO reason to waste money on a “wii U” when “U” can have so much more fun with another / BETTER system with BETTER games. It’s simple. I love mario, but I already bought the original Wii for that and for the classic NES / SNES games. No need to ever buy a Nintendo system again, until they give us REAL reasons to. Maybe they should just make SOFTWARE, they obviously SUCK at getting 3rd party support and a great hardware out. Period.

    • I wasn’t saying any of the games are better than any others, or that Wii U is better than any other console. I was just pointing out that there IS games to play on the machine, while they might not be the exact ones we want, there’s some great games available now. And I’ll agree with you, Nintendo do seem to suck at nurturing third party support on their machines. Sad, but true. Thanks for the comment, too!
